Retrofit leads to optimization of hygiene and safety

Produced for Mondelez International
Bakery & Sweets

The Mondelez International manufactures chocolate, cookies, biscuits, gum, candy, and powdered drinks. Mondelez International empowers people to snack correctly in over 150 countries around the world.

Retrofitting the bearing houses led to the optimization of hygiene and safety while also reducing maintenance.

The current solution created the following challenges: The bearing houses are open, which allows chocolate to enter the bearings, and more time is needed for cleaning and removing any leftover food residues from the bearings before lubrication. Furthermore, each bearing must be lubricated with food-approved grease by qualified personnel following official greasing instructions.

”After testing NGI’s hygienic bearing houses for almost two months in our production, we concluded that they were the perfect solution as they require zero maintenance. "The bearings are lubrication-free, resulting in significant resource savings."

The Challenge

The Trostyanets chocolate factory, part of Mondelez Ukraine, has several conveyors and equipment in a wet environment that are constantly exposed to water and require extra protection. Furthermore, the dry areas have problems with dust and dry particles that can enter the bearings and significantly reduce bearing performance. Therefore, when selecting hygienic components such as a bearing house, it is essential that they can withstand harsh cleaning conditions while maintaining optimal performance and providing excellent hygienic properties.

The Solution

After a detailed discussion with the Equipment Maintenance Engineer, it was possible to identify and provide physical samples of the hygienic bearing houses, which were a perfect fit.

The Effect

"After testing NGI's hygienic bearing houses for almost two months in our production, we concluded that they were the perfect solution as they require zero maintenance. The bearings are lubrication-free, resulting in significant resource savings. Furthermore, retrofitting the bearing houses provides significant improvement in hygienic design, which adds additional safety in production. As a result, we will continuously consider replacing all the bearing houses on our existing conveyor equipment and incorporate hygienic IP69K bearing houses from NGI into our technical documentation for future projects sent to suppliers."

The chain is as strong as the weakest link

Hygienic Design is not just a matter of choosing certified hygienic components, although it can of course help to raise the general level of hygiene in your production.

The chain never gets stronger than the weakest link. Therefore, your entire production environment and your production line must be assessed! See the hygienic advantages in the below photo!
