Optimization of hygienic design minimize cleaning time and maintenance costs

Produced with MOWI
Meat, poultry & fish

MOWI - is a Norwegian salmon producer. The company has fish farms in Norway, Scotland, Canada, the Faroe Islands, Ireland and Chile. They process and export their own fish. They have a global market share of 25 to 30% within salmon and trout.

MOWI needed components that maintain performance in harse cleaning conditions

The bearing houses from NGI can endure harsh cleaning conditions whilst minimizing time spent on maintenance and cleaning.

”After having used the hygienic bearing houses from NGI for almost 3 years in our production, we can conclude that they require zero maintenance and help to reduce time spent on cleaning procedures. Besides the functional advantages, the bearing houses increased the food safety level on our salmon processing facility. We will consider retrofitting all the bearing houses on our existing conveyor equipment and incorporate bearing houses from NGI into our technical documentation for future projects.

Bartosz JakubiszynMechanical Engineer, Mowi Poland

The Challenge

The MOWI factory in Duninowo, Poland has several conveyors located in wet environments which are directly exposed to water and chemicals during cleaning, thus they require protection from external forces. The previously used bearing housings required additional design adjustments to achieve the required hygienic requirement. This process was time and resource consuming. Therefore, it was essential for MOWI that new components could endure harsh cleaning conditions, help minimize the cleaning time of the equipment whilst maintaining optimal performance.

The Solution

Having discussed the practical details together with the equipment design engineer, NGI provided the suitable alternatives for the hygienic bearing houses. They were installed on the existing equipment to check and verify the advantages of this solution in a harsh production environment.

The Effect

Hygienic seals used on the thread between the plate and the bearing housing remain tight after assembly and during the production process. The seal around the shaft is durable and does not require replacement in the long term. It is convenient to carry out the cleaning process of the area between the bearing itself and both mounting points. This is because the design of the bearing housing allows for better access to all areas of the device where the bearing housing is used.
