The Challenge

The technical team identified the floor-machine interface as a key area for reducing contamination risks. In particular, the castors on mobile units were critical: exposed to heavy fish residue and process water, conventional stainless-steel castors couldn’t be effectively cleaned or sanitized, even with extensive water and chemical use.

The Solution

The team quickly identified NGI’s newly developed hygienic castors as the best alternative. Together with NGI, they set up a structured test framework to evaluate the castors’ performance under the harsh conditions of the salmon processing line.

During the castor testing, Filetfabrikken and the NGI team also identified several other areas in the production equipment that could be optimized with NGI components, including bolts, nuts, CIP units, leveling feet, and bearing houses.

The Effect

Filetfabrikken achieved significant savings in its critical cleaning process by optimizing the use of chemicals, water, manpower, and time, supporting its sustainability goals. It also improved overall food safety by reducing the risk of contamination, waste, and potential recalls.

 

Specific improvements on castors:

Over 64% average reduction in bacterial residue compared to standard castors.
